STEVE MORT's BIOGRAPHY

Steve first began his interest in journalism in 1991 when he took an internship at his hometown newspaper near Plymouth, England. During his time there, Steve had several bylines, writing articles and features for the paper. Afterward, Steve took another brief internship at BBC Radio Cornwall where he undertook a number of reporting assignments.

In 1992, Steve joined his college radio station at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, England. He became a newscaster and host. During his time at college, Steve also worked at BBC Radio Norfolk as Sunday sports anchor. Then during his post-graduate Broadcast Journalism course at London's City University, Steve reported for Plymouth Sound Radio as part of a college-sponsored program.

Steve joined County Sound Radio in Surrey, England in 1996 as a full-time reporter. He was responsible for establishing and running the newsroom at sister station, Delta Radio 97.1FM and hosted its nightly thirty minute news show. He also occasionally hosted County Sound's daily news program, County World.

After leaving County Sound, Steve worked briefly at SGR-FM in Essex, England as Senior Journalist before moving to ITN Radio in London. While there, he worked as a reporter for London's 24-hour news station, News Direct 97.3FM and also hosted the station's weekend nighttime program from 12am-6am. Steve also contributed to live coverage of the death and funeral of Princess Diana and the war in Kosovo. Later, he anchored newscasts for AM talk station LBC, and Independent Radio News (IRN), heard on more than 300 stations around the UK. Steve was one of only two hosts asked to front ITN's experimental internet radio service.

In 2000, Steve left ITN Radio to freelance for BBC Greater London Radio (GLR) before taking the position of Radio News Editor at Feature Story News (FSN) in Washington, DC. There he was responsible for producing newscast material for several radio stations around the world including Radio New Zealand, Germany's Radio Deusche Welle, SABC Radio of South Africa and America's MetroNetworks. He covered the 2000 US Presidential election and its aftermath extensively for IRN, anchoring live coverage from Washington on election night. During his time in DC, Steve also covered the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001 and the war in Afghanistan, and carried out reporting assignments for Pacifica Network News, PRI's Marketplace and the Stanley Foundation's syndicated international affairs program, Common Ground. He's been interviewed by CNN and the Baltimore Sun.

In 2003, Steve moved to FSN's New York bureau as Wall Street reporter for Channel News Asia (CNA) television of Singapore. He hosted a daily 15-minute roundup of the day's market action from the Nasdaq Marketsite in Times Square. Steve also covered events in New York for QTN Television, and at the United Nations for CNA and SABC Television - one year coordinating SABC's coverage of the UN General Assembly meetings. During his time in New York, Steve was also instumental in producing features for SABC's Democracy 10 series, celebrating ten years since the end of aparthied in South Africa. During the 2004 US Presidential race, he covered the Republican National Convention from Madison Square Gardens, where he was interviewed by ABC News, and reported live for CNA on election night from Kerry campaign headquarters in Boston.

Steve moved to Florida in 2005, opening FSN's bureau in the Sunshine State. He reports regularly for FSN's many radio affiliates including Australian Independent Radio News, Vatican Radio, Austria's FM4 and SRN News in the United States. He also covers Cuban affairs for British Forces Broadcasting (BFBS). Steve has covered other important stories ranging from hurricanes in the Florida Keys to the Terri Schiavo case in Tampa where he was interviewed by NBC News. Steve travels regularly on assignment and covered the fortunes of African actors at the Oscars in Los Angeles for SABC Television. Steve has also covered several shuttle launches for radio and TV stations from the Kennedy Space Center, including the Return to Flight mission by Discovery - the first manned launch since the 2003 Columbia disaster.

At present, Steve is a principle reporter for Voice of America Television, reporting on events around Florida. He focuses heavily on Cuban issues from Miami, especially since Cuban President Fidel Castro was taken ill in 2006. In addition, Steve took charge of FSN's hourly radio newscast service, FSN World News, in 2005 as editor and anchor. Since then, the newscasts have been picked up by dozens of radio stations around the United States and the world.
